K9 Choice Peanut Butter Flavored Melatonin for Dogs 3 mg
120 Chewable Tablets, 120 Servings. Now with 20% more tablets!
Introducing our New K9 Choice Flavored Melatonin for Dogs. Each bottle contains 120 chewable tablets of 3 mg melatonin in a peanut butter flavor that dogs love. Melatonin is naturally produced by the body in the pineal system and supplementing with melatonin can be highly beneficial. Melatonin is a well known antioxidant and research has indicated that Melatonin can support the endocrine system in dogs. Melatonin can be used to help calm dogs with heightened cortisol (stress hormone) levels due to separation anxiety, fireworks, thunderstorms, canine Cushing’s Disease, and other stressful events.
Our peanut butter flavored melatonin, specifically created for dogs, can help with the following:
Inhibit aromatase enzyme in dogs
Manage symptoms of Cushings in dogs
Hair loss in dogs
Anxiety due to separation, fireworks, thunderstorms, or other stressful events
Reduce elevated cortisol or sex steroid levels
How Melatonin Works
Melatonin is known to inhibit two enzymes needed in the production of cortisol (the stress hormone). Melatonin blocks aromatase enzymes and reduces hydroxylase enzyme. This effectively lowers heightened cortisol levels in dogs with canine Cushings Disease or dogs experiencing elevated cortisol levels due to other types of stress. Whether the stress is a result of Cushings or a specific situation, reducing the increased stress hormones can help reduce anxiety.
Melatonin for Dogs with Cushings
Melatonin is often used in conjunction with lignans to help lower cortisol levels in dogs with Cushing’s Disease. Lignans inhibit two different enzymes needed in the production of cortisol and combined, lignans and melatonin can be the basis of an effective approach against the symptoms of Cushing’s. Many of the symptoms of Cushings Syndrome are a result of elevated cortisol levels; therefore managing these hormone levels can aid in managing the symptoms.
Endocrine system problems are associated with Cushings disease, which may lead to diabetes. Melatonin may help when either condition is present.*
Melatonin and Sleep
It is often believed that melatonin is used to help dogs with Cushings sleep better. While this may work in some cases, the primary function of the melatonin treatment option is to reduce cortisol levels, which helps manage heightened stress hormone levels in dogs with Cushing’s, thus aiding in controlling the Cushings symptoms.
Reports on melatonin for dogs with Cushings have shown that the Cushingoid dog can become less lethargic. Most dogs acclimate to melatonin within a couple weeks and return to normal sleeping and activity levels. If this is not the case, it is recommended to consult a vet to determine if melatonin is the best option.
Research
A study testing the effectiveness of both lignans and melatonin on Cushings in dogs found that the combination of lignans and melatonin can effectively reduce cortisol, inhibit aromotase enzyme, reduce estradiol, and balance hormones in cases for both typical and atypical Cushings disease.
Note:
Always consult your physician or veterinarian before taking melatonin for yourself or your dog. According to Dr Jack Oliver, DVM, you should not use a rapid release melatonin or a timed release melatonin. Use regular melatonin. All of our melatonin products fit these criteria.
Directions for Dogs
The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine and Dr. Jack Oliver, DVM, Head of UofT’s Endocrinology Department, recommends:
3 mg of melatonin (1 tablet) every 12 hours for dogs under 30 lbs
5-6 mg of melatonin (2 tablets) every 12 hours for dogs over 30 lbs
1 mg of melatonin every 12 hours may be recommended for dogs 10 lbs or less, or for those who want to give their dogs very low doses of melatonin.
Other Uses
Melatonin can also help anxious dogs by reducing stress hormone levels.* For separation (or other types of) anxiety, give 1 tablet 30-60 minutes before the stressful event
