From the estate of a western Pennsylvania antiques dealer retired to Tucson during the 1990’s is this charismatic Lester Breininger manganese and yellow slip glazed redware sgrafitto “Horse” plate. It is fully signed “Breininger Pottery / Robesonia, Pa. / August 11, 1998 / Hot Day!” sgrafitto fashion to the bottom. Lester (1935-2011) and Barbara Breininger were primarily known for the artful Pennsylvania German redware pottery they produced over a span of 50 plus years – their “porch show” was a highly anticipated annual event, attracting thousands of enthusiasts from all over the country.  Lester, by day a much loved biology teacher in the Conrad Weiser School District of Berks County for over 30 years years (though don’t let that fool you) , also amassed a significant collection of top tier Pennsylvania folk art which was dispersed in a series of celebrated auction sales after his passing. Condition is quite fine, with a subtle aura of treasured display and that’s pretty much  it. No chips or cracks or any hidden restorations. Size is about 7 in. across and 1 1/8 in. high at the coggled rim. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition – a really nice example.
